The Hoth Review – Is It A Viable Backlink Service?

This review has been a long time coming. I’ve been a Hoth user for a good number of months, and first talked about the service late last year.

I’ve used about 5 or 6 different packages on sites, and always seen a positive result. However, those results were always blurred slightly as I was also doing other things to said sites.

When it came to writing my Hoth review though, I used a site that had previously had zero backlinks built to it, aside from via social media shares on Twitter and Pinterest.

What Is The Hoth?

For those who don’t now, The Hoth is a backlink service that will build free web properties on your behalf, then add links to your website(s) from those properties. They will then send social links, bookmarks, and high powered blog network links to those properties, in a tiered linking fashion.

See the image below:

This is the exact kind of linking that top SEOs like Alex Becker, Stephen Floyd, Matthew Woodward, and many more talk about.

It’s the best way to (artificially) build links to your site, and the most natural looking. Overall, it takes about one month for The Hoth to get this whole package ready, and it could be anywhere from 2-6 weeks for you to realize the links are working.

That’s why you can check out my results below, and have a little faith.

Why This Works

It would require a whole series of posts for me to explain exactly how it all works, but here are the basics.

Google have been pushing the mantra that relevance is the new PR for some time now. In layman’s terms, this means that the more RELEVANT blogs, websites, and forums that link to you, the better those links are. You don’t want to go out there and spam your site with links from all over the web.

10-20 relevant, high quality links is going to do more for your site than 1,000 irrelevant ones.

With The Hoth, they build relevant web 2.0 properties for you, load content onto them, give you the login details in case you need to change the links later, and then build even more relevant links to THOSE properties.

Tiered link building like this works because each layer of links gets its own set of relevant backlinks in turn. This means that although you might only get a handful of links pointing to your site, those links will be powerful.

Because only the top tier points to your site, it doesn’t end up with a low quality, suspicious looking backlink profile. Imagine if your site went from 0 links, to 50 links in a day. How odd would that look to Google?

Wouldn’t it be better to build 5+ links every month, and have those links slowly dripped with links of their own?

You bet it would, because that’s exactly how natural linking occurs. I write something good, my friends link to it, their friends link to them, people bookmark and share those links, and Google thinks “Wow..Dom’s article is probably quite good then”.

While the content I had put on my web 2.0 blogs was never going to win any prizes, it was written to a pretty high standard, and was unique. This is precisely the kind of content that you want to be getting links from.

I’ve talked about my results a little bit before, so I’ll do a recap here, and then show you my latest set of results.

Shaving Site – 500% Traffic Increase

I managed to increase the traffic to one of my affiliate sites by 500% without adding any new content. This was done with 2 Hoth packages and some weak PBN links.

Read more here.

Client Site – First Page One Rankings

I sent two of the lowest priced packages to a client’s site (with their permission!) and got their main money keyword to page 1 of Google. The client has barely touched the site since I built it for them and yet they have a page 1 ranking for a money keyword.

As of writing this post, they are in position 6.

Home Gym Site – Article Moves From Position 37 to 7

I will go into more details about this one below, but in a nutshell, two Hoth Blitz packages got great results, and one article moved from position 37 to 7 for a buying “best of” keyword.

Shaving Site Again – From Position 10 to Position 5 in Three weeks.

I had my shaving site “stuck” on position 10 for two keywords for weeks and weeks and weeks. 1 Hoth Blitz package moved it up to position 5 and close to the coveted top 3 position in fewer than 3 weeks.

Case Study – Untouched Site

As mentioned above, I wanted a proper “pure” case study to show you, so I used This is a site that has been involved in my “dual site case study” for a while, but until now had no links built to it.

Well OK I guess it had 1 link built to it from this very site, but nothing relevant.

Sometime in early March, I decided to test Hoth Blitz on it.

Hoth Blitz Package

The Blitz version of their service is slightly different from their standard package, which is why I was curious to test it. In this package, they simply place links from high quality sites directly to the URL’s and keywords you tell them to.

This differs from the standard pack, because 1.) You can get the links immediately if you wish and 2.) The links are placed on existing properties rather than on ones built for you. They are fast and powerful. Hence the name “Blitz”.

While this is a bit like some of those low-quality Fiverr gigs you see out there, the difference is that they are placed on relevant, high quality sites, that look just like standard PBN sites. They are placed on the homepage in the sidebar, but ONLY the homepage. These are not lower quality “sitewide” links.

Results with Blitz.

I bought the lowest priced package, at $250 USD.

I have to admit I was a bit nervous, so when the report came out, I checked all of the sites in Majestic SEO. Some of them were quite surprising as they had low trust flow metrics. Worthless links I thought. Still, 3 of the 5 sites were excellent.

I chose to build 1 link per day for 5 days. Let’s get this blitzkrieg on!

Here are the keywords I tracked and their positions right before I ordered the pack. Please note, I only built links to 4 articles and the homepage, but I tracked many keywords. I wanted to see what would happen to a number of articles, not just the ones linked to.

I actually checked the rankings over and over again over the next few weeks, and there was a lot of “Google Dancing” going on. This is only natural when a site suddenly gets some links sent its way.

Here is what the rankings looked like 1 week later, about 2-3 days after the links were built:

I was surprised to see that there had already been some positive movement after such a short period. Of course, the next few weeks saw some ups and downs and 3 weeks later, the rankings were only a few places higher.

For $250 I was pleased that my rankings had moved the right way, and knew that they would only go higher, but I wanted something better, so I bought another pack. This meant that I had spent $500 and would build 10 links in total.

For this second pack, I slowed things down and told them to drip the links out every 3 days, over the course of 15 days. This would look more natural I thought.

It’s great that you can control the link anchor text, niche, and even the frequency it is added, then sit back and let it happen.

This is how the rankings looked 5 days after the second pack was finished:

Not bad! Moving in the right direction, and great to see that even the ones I didn’t link to (home gym mirrors for example) moving up as well.

Now here’s how the rankings looked yesterday, which was 1 week later. (about 6 weeks after the first 5 links were added, and 2 weeks after the second).

This is fantastic! One of my main keywords moved up to position 7!

I am pretty confident that these rankings will continue to rise, but if they don’t, a third pack would have an even more powerful effect.

I will probably focus on sending some social signals to balance out the site’s profile now.

Is It Worth You Buying?

Were these rankings worth $500?

Well, considering I started playing around with this site back in October 2014 and had little positive movement, then was able to get fantastic results in just 6 weeks? Yes.

Plus, once a few more of these keywords reach page 1 and more traffic comes in, I’ll be able to start tweaking the site and getting the money back quickly. Worst case scenario, I can sell it for a decent price too.

How The Hoth Compares

So considering that The Hoth Blitz costs $250, how does it compare with its competitors? $200-300 is how much some PBN services cost, and I would imagine they get similar results. If you don’t want to wait for someone like Jon Haver or Glen Allsopp to open up their service, Blitz is a good option. All three services are great and I’d say on a par with one another.

The lower priced regular Hoth packs (starting at $60) are also worth using, as two of these packs got one of my customers to position 6 for a keyword, although it did take several months.

A Word Of Caution

I used Blitz on an aged site that had social shares. I wouldn’t recommend using it right off the bat on a brand new site.

That said, I WOULD recommend one of the regular Hoth packs for a new site, as the links are dripped slowly and look more natural.

If you’re unsure..start with a normal pack (any price is fine) and then use Blitz for a couple of months after that.

Final Thoughts

While I can personally say that I recommend The Hoth, I will prefer to build PBNs and send those links to my sites. However, that takes time and effort, and with a Hoth pack, I can build a nice layer of high quality relevant links on autopilot.

In future I’ll probably build one or two Hoth packs in conjunction with high quality PBN links and good social shares. For those of you who don’t know how to build PBNs or are wary of using them, I’d definitely recommend checking out The Hoth.

Oh, and you can get some pretty good email support from them too.

Boost Your Rankings With The Hoth

  1. Thanks for sharing your results. I’ve been considering the hoth for a while now and have mixed feelings.

  2. Does SENuke do this or does HOTH use SENuke ?

  3. Dom,
My current niche site has PBN’s pointed directly to my site and was planning on pointing tumblr web 2.0 links to either my site or pbn page. What would you suggest. My next site I will follow your suggestion of creating tumblr accounts and point pbn to tumblr which will point directly to my site. Nothing I can do for my current site now. Wish I had come across this post before starting backlinking.

    • There’s nothing wrong with pointing PBN’s directly to your money site if you don’t overdo it and the PBNs are quality. You shouldn’t send web 2.0s to a PBN though. If the PBN needs the extra boost, it’s a weak PBN and defeats the point of using it.

      • Thanks Dom,
As always, your knowledge in niche marketing is outstanding. I’ve started this journey into Amazon Affiliate Niche Marketing in September and can totally see me being able to build a continued monthly income that will allow me to retire earlier that I could have imagined. My goal is to retire in three years when I reach 55 and travel throughout USA. At some point I would like to diversify into other affiliate marketing strategies.

Wishing you and your family all the best in 2017 and beyond,

  4. Krishna Rungta

    Were you hit by penguin?

    • Penguin targets anchor text over optimization more than anything, so regardless of what types of links you use you can be hit by Penguin. Since I don’t over-optimize my anchor text, I’ve never been hit by penguin.

  5. Thanks, Dom. I have used 2 Hoth platinum packages and have been satisfied with the results. I plan to try Rank Guardian next as well as your drip service.

  6. Hi Dom,
How your site is performing today? According to ahrefs there is a big drop in referring domains and pages. Organic traffic is very light. Are you getting any income from that site?

  7. Liking this! I am looking to build backlinks to my new site but…it is VERY time-consuming, I only have a certain amount of time each day so would plow my efforts into creating good content. Will give this a go 🙂

  8. Great article Dom. I always wanted to use this service. But since being slapped back 2012, I don’t mess with any type of link building service. It should be interesting to see the long term effects.

  9. Michael Romano

What are the long-term implications of using a service like this? It seems like Google will eventually figure out that these are just paid links (but one step removed).

    • Tiered link building has been around for a long time and of course Google knows it’s paid linking, but if it’s done well it shouldn’t be an issue. Make no mistake, this isn’t white-hat link building though.

  10. Alaa Khassa

    Great review Dom!

Did you make your money back through the mailing list & the links in the site ?

    • I’ve made a decent amount of affiliate commissions from The Hoth yes, but I only promote products I believe in and work. The site that I used The Hoth on first was only earning me about $50 a month prior to using Hoth, and has earned me $1,500 in the last 5 weeks alone, so the link building I did (both The Hoth and PBNs) has clearly paid off!

  11. Hey Dom,

Great review, man! I actually scheduled a call with them for tomorrow to discuss some things. I am thinking this may supplement some of the other efforts that we are working on together nicely. I figure the combination may deliver the most power. Thanks!

  12. Dom, nice review…Gregg at the Hoth has been very good to me as well which is worth noting. They answer the phone and return emails quickly. Also, they support the VFW which is great! I am using them extensively for my site at work!
